The head girls basketball coach plays a vital role in advancing the mission of the school by using athletics as a platform for character development, leadership, and community building. Serving as the primary ambassador of their sport within the Wesleyan community, the head coach establishes the program’s vision, sets clear expectations, and ensures alignment across all levels of participation. They are responsible for developing both student athletes and coaching staff, fostering a culture of excellence, and upholding the standards of the athletic department. The head coach reports directly to the Director of Athletics and includes a teaching load of three courses.

 

Responsibilities

 

• Set the vision and develop expectations to manage all levels of the program (K-12).
• Coordinate scheduling for games, practices, officials, and transportation for all levels of the program, including middle school and high school.
• Maintain high personal standards of conduct that reflect the mission of Wesleyan.
• Proactively communicate with parents and families regarding schedules, expectations, team policies, and student progress.
• Manage program budget with the athletic director.
• Oversee equipment, uniforms, and facility coordination.
• Recruit, evaluate, and develop assistant coaches.
• Oversee off-season programming (conditioning, skill sessions, camps).
• Demonstrate passion and best practices through ongoing professional development.
• Supervise and support student academic and behavior performance in the classroom.
• Understand and implement GHSA guidelines as they relate to your sport (eligibility, sportsmanship, safety, and other policies).
• Collaborate with the College Recruiting Coordinator to assist students and families who desire to participate at the college level.
• Encourage multi-sport participation and support the full athletic program.
• Follow guidelines for head coaches in the Wesleyan Athletic Handbook.

 

Qualifications

 

• A deep and mature Christian faith with a strong understanding of how athletics supports the Christian mission of the school.
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to build positive, productive relationships with students, families, faculty, and colleagues.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead, motivate, and mentor student athletes and coaching staff.
• Superior organizational skills and attention to detail, with the capacity to manage a comprehensive, multi level (K–12) athletic program.
• Prior head coaching experience preferred.
